Waxing and Tattoos: The Complete Guide to Getting Hair Removed Around Ink
Tattoos and waxing coexist perfectly fine for the vast majority of clients. But the relationship between ink and wax does require some thought, specifically around timing after new tattoos and ongoing care for healed ones.
Here's everything you need to know before your appointment.
Why Timing Matters After a New Tattoo
Fresh tattoo ink sits in an open wound. The tattooing process punctures the skin thousands of times to deposit pigment into the dermis, and for the first several weeks afterward, the skin is in active recovery mode. It's healing, the outer layer is regenerating, and the skin's barrier function is compromised.
Waxing over or even near a healing tattoo creates several problems. The wax can adhere to peeling or fragile skin and lift it off during removal, which causes pain, damages the skin, and can pull ink out of the dermis before it has fully set. The heat from the wax increases inflammation in an area that's already inflamed. And the physical trauma of hair removal can disrupt the healing process and distort the appearance of the tattoo.
The general guidance is to wait a minimum of four weeks after a new tattoo before waxing in that area. Many tattoo artists recommend six to eight weeks, particularly for larger pieces or areas with dense shading. When in doubt, wait until the tattoo is fully healed, meaning no peeling, no raised texture, no sensitivity to touch, and the surface feels like normal skin again.
What "Around" the Tattoo Means
The concern is specifically for skin directly over the tattoo and immediately surrounding it. You don't need to avoid waxing an entire limb because of one tattoo. If you have a tattoo on your inner ankle, a leg wax from mid-calf upward is perfectly fine. The esthetician simply works around the tattooed area and leaves a margin around it.
For body areas like the back, where a tattoo may cover a significant portion of the surface, the conversation becomes more specific. Tell your esthetician before the appointment starts and let them assess which areas can be safely waxed and which need to be left alone. Waxing Over Fully Healed Tattoos
Once a tattoo is fully healed, waxing over it is generally fine. The ink is in the dermis, which is deeper than the epidermis that waxing interacts with. A properly performed wax on fully healed skin doesn't reach the ink layer.
That said, a few things are worth knowing for ongoing care.
Waxing can very gradually affect the appearance of tattoos over a long period of time, particularly on older tattoos or skin that has become thinner with age. The mechanical exfoliation of waxing removes the outermost skin layer, which is the layer that affects how light interacts with the ink underneath. Most clients don't notice any meaningful change over years of waxing, but it's worth being aware of if your tattoo is large, highly detailed, or particularly old.
Sun exposure on waxed areas is a separate concern. Freshly waxed skin is more susceptible to UV damage, and UV exposure is the primary driver of tattoo fading over time. Applying SPF to waxed skin that covers tattoos is good practice regardless, and is particularly important in the 48 hours after a waxing appointment. How to Prepare Tattooed Skin for a Wax
The prep for waxing tattooed skin follows the same principles as any body area, with a bit of extra attention to keeping the skin well-conditioned.
Tattoos benefit from consistent moisturizing, and well-hydrated skin waxes more effectively. In the days before your appointment, keep tattooed areas moisturized with a fragrance-free lotion. On the day of the appointment, come in with clean, product-free skin. No lotion applied on the day, including on the tattoo, as this reduces wax adhesion.
If the tattooed area has been exposed to significant sun recently, give it 48 hours before waxing. This applies to tattooed and non-tattooed skin alike. Aftercare When Waxing Over Tattoos
Post-wax care for tattooed areas is the same as for any waxed skin. Keep the area moisturized, avoid heat and friction for 24 to 48 hours, and stay out of direct sun without SPF. The same rules that protect healing waxed skin also happen to be good ongoing care for tattoo maintenance.
If you're waxing an area with a tattoo for the first time, it's normal to be a little more cautious with the first session. Pay attention to how the tattooed skin responds and let your esthetician know afterward if anything felt different than expected. That feedback helps them adjust the approach for future appointments.
What to Tell Your Esthetician
Before any appointment that involves waxing near or over tattoos, mention it when you arrive. Specifically, share:
Whether any tattoos in the area are new or fully healed. How old any new ink is if you've recently been tattooed. Whether any tattooed areas feel sensitive, still show peeling, or have raised texture. If you've had any reactions at tattooed areas from previous waxing.
