No-Shave November: Grow the Beard, Wax the Back
The Beard Gets a Pass. Everything Else Doesn't Have To
No-Shave November is almost here, and plenty of guys are about to put the razor away for 30 days. Some do it for men's health awareness. Some do it because it's getting colder and a beard feels cozy. Some just want to see what their face can grow.
Whatever your reason, here's the thing nobody tells you. Letting your face go wild doesn't mean the rest of you has to follow. The guys whose November beards look the best usually keep everything around them clean. A full beard looks rugged on purpose. A full beard plus a fuzzy neck, bushy brows, and a back growing its own sweater looks like you gave up in October.
At WAX LAB in West Hollywood, we see this every year. So here's our guide to growing the beard while keeping the rest of you sharp.
Your Back Is Not Part of the Challenge
Let's start with the big one. No-Shave November is about facial hair. Nobody signed you up to grow out your back.
Back hair keeps growing whether you're paying attention or not, and November lands right in the middle of holiday party season. Between Friendsgiving, office parties, and the occasional hot tub, there's a decent chance your shirt comes off at some point. A back wax keeps you smooth for three to four weeks, which means one appointment at the start of November covers almost the whole challenge.
If your back hair is mostly up top or down low, a partial back wax ($43) might be all you need. If it covers more ground, our full back wax ($74) takes care of everything from shoulders to waistline.
Keep the Neckline Clean So the Beard Looks Intentional
This is the single biggest difference between a beard that looks grown and one that looks neglected. When hair creeps down your neck toward your collar, the beard loses its shape and starts blending into everything else.
You have two necklines to think about. The front one, under your jaw, is part of the beard, so your barber or a careful trim usually handles that. The back one, at the nape of your neck, is where waxing really shines. A neck wax ($18) clears the fuzz below your hairline so your haircut and beard both look fresher for longer. It's quick, it's affordable, and it makes a bigger difference than you'd expect.
Don't Forget Your Brows
Here's something we hear a lot: guys growing a big beard start to notice their brows look messy by comparison. A heavy beard draws attention to your whole face, and stray brow hairs or a unibrow stand out more than usual.
A men's brow wax is not about making your eyebrows look "done." A good waxer keeps them natural and just removes the strays and the middle. If you only want the unibrow gone, our middle brow service is $15 and takes a few minutes.
Nose and Ears Still Count
The longer your beard gets, the more your face reads as either groomed or not groomed. Stray nose and ear hair pushes it straight into the second group.
These are two of the fastest services we do, and the results last longer than trimming. If you've never tried it, our guide to nose and ear waxing walks you through how it feels. Spoiler: it's way less dramatic than you're picturing.
What About the Cheeks?
This one is your call. Some guys want the full, untouched November look, cheek line and all. Others like a crisp upper edge so the beard looks shaped. If you want a clean cheek line, ask your waxer about men's face waxing. It gives you a sharp edge without the stubbly shadow a razor leaves a couple days later.
Just remember that the cheek area is part of the beard's shape. If you're unsure, start conservative. You can always take a little more off at your next visit.
Your No-Shave November Waxing Schedule
Here's an easy plan for the month:
Late October or the first week of November: Book your back, shoulders, and neck. This is your big appointment.
Mid-November: Quick brow, nose, and ear touch-up if you need it.
Early December: Decide whether the beard stays or goes, then book your next back wax to stay on a three to four week schedule.
If you're coming from shaving, make sure your hair is about a quarter inch long before your first wax. Our guide to switching from shaving to waxing covers what to expect on your first visit. And if you hit the gym a lot, check out how to time your workouts around waxing so you don't irritate fresh skin.
Wait, Doesn't Waxing Count as Cheating?
Nope. The point of No-Shave November is putting the razor down on your face. Nobody's checking your back. Keeping everything else tidy is what makes the beard look like a choice instead of an accident.
Grow It Out, Keep It Clean
A great November beard is all about contrast. Let your face do its thing, and keep your back, shoulders, neck, and brows clean so everything looks deliberate. At WAX LAB, we welcome every body and every beard, and we're happy to help you figure out which areas to keep and which to clear.
