Ingrown Hairs: Why You Keep Getting Them and How to Actually Stop

Ingrown hairs are one of the most common complaints we hear from new clients at WAX LAB. They're frustrating, sometimes painful, and they tend to come back in the same spots over and over no matter what you try. That repetition is the clue. If they keep happening in the same place, something specific is causing them there.

Most ingrown hair problems are solvable. Here's how.

What Actually Causes Ingrown Hairs

An ingrown hair happens when a hair that's been removed or cut fails to grow back up and out of the skin properly. Instead, it curls back around or grows sideways, staying beneath the skin's surface and triggering an inflammatory response. That shows up as a small red bump, sometimes with a visible hair trapped inside, sometimes not.

There are a few things that set this up. Dead skin buildup on the surface is the most common. If there's a layer of dry, dead skin sitting over the follicle opening, hair that's trying to grow out gets blocked and redirects. Shaving is the second major contributor because it cuts hair at the surface with a sharp, flat edge. That blunt tip is much more likely to curl back into the skin than a hair that's been removed from the root with a tapered regrowth tip.

Tight clothing that traps friction and heat against the skin, especially in the bikini area and underarms, adds to the problem. So does very coarse or curly hair, which naturally tends to curve as it grows.

Why Shaving Makes It Worse

This is the cycle most people are stuck in. They shave, get ingrowns, shave again to manage the area, get more ingrowns, and assume that's just how their skin behaves. It's not. It's how their skin behaves when it's being repeatedly shaved.

Shaving cuts hair at the surface and leaves a sharp, blunt edge. As that hair grows back, the blunt tip pushes against the skin at an angle instead of breaking through cleanly. Tight follicles, coarse hair texture, and skin that hasn't been exfoliated recently all make it worse.

Switching from shaving to waxing removes hair from the root and allows it to grow back with a naturally tapered tip. That tip is much less likely to cause problems as it grows out. After several consistent waxing sessions, most clients see a significant reduction in ingrowns in the areas they were shaving before.

The key word is consistent. Going back and forth between shaving and waxing keeps restarting the problem. If you wax and then shave between appointments, you're undoing the progress the waxing is making.

The Exfoliation Factor

Even if you've switched to waxing, ingrowns can still happen if dead skin buildup isn't being addressed. Exfoliation is the maintenance step most people skip.

Starting about 48 hours after your waxing appointment, exfoliate the waxed areas gently two to three times a week. A soft cloth or a gentle scrub works fine. You're not trying to aggressively strip the skin, just keep the follicle openings clear so that regrowth comes through without obstruction.

Moisturize daily. Dry skin flakes and accumulates more quickly, which speeds up follicle blockage. Hydrated skin stays more supple and doesn't shed dead cells as aggressively.

Our spring waxing routine guide covers the full between-appointment skincare routine, including exfoliation timing, if you want the complete breakdown.

When You Need More Than DIY Maintenance

For clients with persistent ingrown hairs, especially in the bikini area, between-appointment care alone often isn't enough to break the cycle. That's what the Junk and Jewel Facials are designed for.

The Junk Facial (for the male pelvic area) and the Jewel Facial (for the female pelvic area) are 30-minute skincare treatments that include cleansing, steam to open follicles, professional extractions to remove trapped hairs and congestion, a customized mask, and moisturizer. They target the exact issue at its source rather than just treating the surface.

For ingrowns on the glutes or upper thighs, the Booty Facial works the same way. Steam, extractions, mask, moisturizer. A lot of clients who come in frustrated by chronic bumps in those areas see noticeable improvement after a single treatment and sustained improvement when they book it regularly alongside their wax.

The Role of Clothing and Habits

What you wear and do after a wax affects whether ingrowns develop. Tight synthetic clothing immediately after waxing traps heat and friction against freshly opened follicles, which creates the exact conditions ingrown hairs need.

For at least 24 hours after any waxing appointment in the bikini or leg area, wear loose, breathable clothing. Natural fabrics like cotton allow airflow and reduce friction. This is especially relevant for clients who go straight from a wax appointment to the gym or who wear compression gear regularly. Our gym and waxing guide covers the workout timing question specifically.

Hair Type and Ingrown Risk

Some people are simply more prone to ingrowns because of their hair type. Coarser, curlier hair has a natural tendency to curve as it grows, which increases the chances it re-enters the skin. People with very dense hair growth in the bikini area tend to deal with this more than others.

Regular waxing gradually addresses this because hair that's removed from the root consistently becomes finer and sparser over time. Finer hair has less structural strength to push back into the skin. The improvement isn't immediate after one or two sessions, but clients who wax consistently for six to twelve months often notice their chronic ingrown problem has essentially resolved.

Staying on a regular schedule every three to four weeks is what allows the hair growth cycle to sync up and the follicles to stay consistently clear.

What to Do If You Have an Active Ingrown Right Now

Don't pick at it. Extracting an ingrown at home without proper technique usually makes things worse, introduces bacteria, and can leave a dark spot that takes weeks to fade.

Warm compresses applied to the area twice a day soften the skin and often allow the hair to work its way to the surface on its own. Keep the area clean and moisturized. A gentle salicylic acid product can help clear the follicle from the outside, but avoid anything harsh or heavily fragranced.

If you have multiple active ingrowns or one that looks infected, a professional extraction during a Jewel, Junk, or Booty Facial is the right call. Your waxologist can handle it cleanly with the right tools and products, and treat the surrounding skin at the same time.
