Brazilian Wax Styles Explained: Strip, Triangle, Landing Strip, or Bare

Most people know they want a Brazilian wax. What they're less clear on is what they actually want it to look like. The style choices rarely get explained before the appointment starts, which leaves a lot of clients either pointing vaguely or just saying "the usual" when there isn't one yet.
Here's a plain-language breakdown of every Brazilian wax style, what each one looks like, and who tends to prefer each option. No awkward guessing in the room.
What a Brazilian Covers Regardless of Style
First, the baseline. A Brazilian wax removes hair from the front pubic area, the labia, and the back (the strip between the cheeks). That's what makes it a Brazilian versus a bikini wax, which only addresses the sides and sometimes the top.
The style choice only applies to the front section. The back is always fully waxed as part of any Brazilian service. So when you're choosing a style, you're really deciding what you want to keep, if anything, in the front.
At WAX LAB, our Brazilian service starts at $72, and our services page lists the extended option as well, which covers additional areas for a more thorough result.
Fully Bare
This is the most popular option, and the one most people picture when they think "Brazilian." Everything is removed. Front, back, sides, and everything in between. The result is completely smooth with no hair remaining anywhere in the area.
It's low-maintenance between appointments because there's no shape to maintain, just smoothness. When the hair grows back, it grows back evenly across the whole area rather than at the edges of a shape, which some people find easier to manage.
This style is also sometimes called a Hollywood wax in other countries, though at WAX LAB we use Brazilian to refer to any front-to-back service and style choices are discussed at the start of your appointment.
The Landing Strip
A narrow vertical strip of hair is left in the center of the front pubic area. The width varies by preference, but it's typically about half an inch to one inch wide. Everything on either side, plus the back, is removed.
This is one of the most requested styles for clients who want to keep some hair but want a very clean, defined look. It's easy to maintain because the edges are straight lines rather than curves. If you're new to Brazilians and not sure how you'll feel about going fully bare, a landing strip is a good starting point. You can always go barer at a future appointment.
The Triangle
A triangle of hair is left in the front, usually pointing downward. The sides and bottom are waxed to create clean edges, and everything outside the triangle is removed.
The triangle tends to look the most natural because it follows the body's own hairline shape. The size of the triangle can be adjusted. A smaller, tighter triangle is close to the look of a very high-cut bikini bottom. A larger one is fuller and more natural.
If you prefer a more natural appearance but still want the cleanliness of waxed sides and back, the triangle is typically the right call.
The Square or Postage Stamp
Similar to a triangle but with straight edges instead of tapered ones. A small square of hair is left in the center-front. It's a very specific style that some clients prefer for its clean geometric look, though it's less commonly requested than the triangle or landing strip.
If this is what you have in mind, just describe it to your esthetician at the start of the appointment. Something like "I want a small square in the front, everything else removed" is all you need to say.
The Bikini Line Only
This is technically a bikini wax rather than a Brazilian, though the distinction confuses people. A bikini wax removes hair from the sides (what would show outside bikini bottoms) and sometimes the top. It does not address the middle or back.
If you want to keep all your natural hair but just clean up the edges for swimsuit season, a bikini wax is the service you want. If you want anything removed from the center or back, that's a Brazilian.
Extended Options
The extended Brazilian covers the same front-to-back area but with extra attention to any remaining hair at the edges of the waxed zone, plus full glute coverage. It's the option for clients who want the most thorough possible result. WAX LAB also offers Manzilian services for male clients, with the same style customization available.
For clients transitioning, our T-Zilian service is designed specifically for trans and nonbinary clients with adapted technique and the same style options.
How to Ask for What You Want
You don't need to know the technical name for any of this. In the room, before your esthetician starts, they'll ask what you want. You can describe it in plain language: "Leave a small strip in the front, take everything else," or "Fully bare, nothing left," or "Keep a triangle but make it small."
If you're genuinely not sure what you want, say that. A good esthetician will show you options and ask questions to narrow it down. There's no wrong answer and no judgment at WAX LAB. Your preference is your preference.
If you're a first-timer who hasn't thought about this before your appointment, our post on what to expect at your first wax covers how the whole consultation process works so you're not caught off guard.
How Style Choice Affects Maintenance
Fully bare is the easiest between appointments because there's no shape to maintain. Any regrowth just grows back evenly across the area.
Shaped styles like a triangle or landing strip require a little more precision to maintain from session to session. If you want the shape to stay consistent, it helps to book with the same esthetician each time so they know the dimensions you prefer.
For clients who wax regularly, most find that after three or four sessions they have a clear sense of which style they like and it becomes a habit. The first appointment is usually the one where you're figuring it out.
Between sessions, avoid shaving to try to maintain the edges of your chosen style. Shaving disrupts the hair growth cycle you're building with regular waxing and makes the next appointment more difficult. Our post on why you should never shave between waxing sessions explains exactly what happens when you do.
For the best long-term results with any Brazilian style, staying on a consistent four-to-five-week schedule is what keeps the hair growth synchronized and the results looking clean. Our guide on how often you should come in helps you find the right cadence for your hair type.
Book your Brazilian at WAX LAB and tell us exactly what you want. We'll make sure you get it.
