The Real Reason You're Still Getting Ingrown Hairs (It's Not What You Think)

If you've been getting waxed regularly and you're still dealing with ingrown hairs, you've probably been told to exfoliate more. And while exfoliation is part of the answer, it's rarely the whole story. Ingrowns are caused by a few different things happening at once, and if you're only addressing one of them, you're going to keep dealing with the problem.

Here's what's actually going on and what to do about it.

What an Ingrown Hair Actually Is

When a hair is removed from the root (through waxing) or cut at the surface (through shaving), it has to regrow and find its way back up through the skin. Most of the time, it does this without any issue. But sometimes the hair curls back into the follicle, or gets blocked by dead skin cells sitting on the surface, and can't break through. Instead of exiting cleanly, it grows sideways under the skin. That's an ingrown.

The result is a bump, sometimes red and raised, sometimes with a visible hair underneath, and occasionally infected. They're uncomfortable and they're annoying — but they're preventable. Our dedicated post on ingrown hairs and how to actually stop them goes even deeper if you want the full breakdown.

The Actual Causes

Dead skin buildup: This is the most common one. If dead skin cells pile up on the surface, they create a barrier that freshly grown hair can't push through easily. Regular, gentle exfoliation removes that layer and keeps the follicle opening clear. But exfoliating too aggressively or too soon after a wax can irritate the skin and make things worse, not better. Wait 48 hours after your appointment before exfoliating.

Tight clothing: This one surprises people. Wearing tight underwear, leggings, or clothing that creates friction over freshly waxed skin can push newly growing hairs back into the follicle before they have a chance to emerge. Loose, breathable clothing for the first 24 to 48 hours after a wax makes a real difference.

Dry skin: When skin is dehydrated, it doesn't shed dead cells as efficiently, and hair has a harder time breaking through the surface. Daily moisturizing keeps the skin supple and makes it easier for hair to grow out normally. Fragrance-free lotion works well; you don't need anything fancy. Our post-wax skincare guide has a simple routine to follow.

Hair texture: People with naturally curly or coarse hair are more prone to ingrowns because the hair has a natural tendency to curl as it grows. This doesn't mean waxing won't work — it absolutely does — but it does mean the aftercare routine matters more. Regular exfoliation and consistent waxing over time help train the hair to grow in a straighter pattern.

Shaving between appointments: This is a big one. When you shave, the hair is cut at an angle, leaving a sharp, blunt tip. That sharp edge is more likely to pierce the skin and grow back inward. It also disrupts the growth cycle you've been building. If you've been shaving between sessions, that's very likely a major contributing factor. Our post on why you should never shave between waxing sessions explains exactly why this keeps happening.

What You Can Do About It

Start with a consistent aftercare routine. After every wax, keep the area moisturized and gently exfoliated in the days that follow. A soft cloth in the shower works fine. You don't need a harsh scrub. The goal is to keep the skin's surface from getting congested, not to scour it. Our guide on how to care for your skin before and after waxing lays out exactly what to use and when.

If you're getting ingrowns specifically in the bikini or Brazilian area, ask about a Junk Facial or Jewel Facial at your next visit. These targeted treatments include steam, extractions, and a mask designed to clear out congested follicles and put you back on track. Both services are listed on our services page.

Also take a look at what you're wearing right after your appointment. Tight workout leggings or fitted underwear directly after a wax are not your friend. Give your skin some breathing room.

When Ingrowns Keep Coming Back

If you're doing everything right and still dealing with persistent ingrowns in the same spot, it's worth mentioning it to your esthetician. There may be a technique adjustment that helps, or there may be something specific about that area that needs a different approach. At WAX LAB, we pay attention to these patterns and adjust accordingly.

Staying on your wax schedule is also a long-term solution. The more consistently you wax, the finer the hair gets, and finer hair is significantly less likely to become ingrown. Clients who have been waxing for a year or more typically see a major reduction in ingrown hair problems compared to when they started. Check out our post on keeping your wax routine on track all year for tips on staying consistent.
